Why It Feels So Good to Come Home
There's a moment after almost every holiday when you unpack your suitcase, make yourself a cup of tea and simply think," It's so nice to be home." But why does that feeling run so much deeper than we realise? In this post, we're exploring the comfort of familiarity, the beauty of everyday rituals and why appreciating the life we come home to might be one of the greatest signs of contentment.
Why It Feels So Good to Come Home
There's a moment that happens after almost every holiday. The suitcases are unpacked, the kettle is on, and you're back in your own space. Somewhere between putting the washing on and sinking into your favourite chair, you find yourself thinking,"It's so nice to be home."
I've just come back from a wonderful week away with my family. We made memories, laughed a lot and enjoyed every minute together. But as I walked through my front door, I smiled. Not because I wanted the holiday to end, and not because I hadn't enjoyed being away. Simply because it was lovely to be home. It made me wonder why that feeling is so universal.
Why Home Feels Like a Safe Place
When we think about home, we often picture a building. Four walls, a roof and an address. But I don't think that's what makes somewhere feel like home. Home is a feeling. It's where your shoulders soften without you even realising, where you instinctively know where everything is and where your body seems to take a deep breath and quietly says,"We're back."
One of the things we know about our nervous system is that it loves familiarity. Even when we're enjoying a wonderful holiday, our brains are taking in new surroundings, different routines, unfamiliar beds and new sounds. It's exciting, but it also requires energy. Coming home means returning to what your brain already knows. You know how your bed feels, which mug you'll reach for in the morning and the little routines that shape your day. Those familiar details quietly tell your nervous system that it's safe to relax.
How Everyday Routines Bring Comfort
One thing I realised after coming home was that it's often the smallest things that make the biggest difference. Making a cup of tea exactly how you like it. Opening the back door first thing in the morning. Watching the birds in the garden. Listening to your favourite morning meditation. Putting on your comfiest clothes or sitting in your favourite spot. None of these moments are extraordinary, yet together they create a life that feels deeply comforting.
We often overlook these rituals because they're so familiar, but perhaps that's exactly why they matter. They're woven into the fabric of our everyday lives, quietly supporting us without asking for recognition.
Finding Gratitude in Everyday Life
We spend so much of our lives looking forward to holidays, weekends away and future adventures, and rightly so. Exploring new places is one of life's greatest joys. But sometimes, in our excitement about getting away, we forget to appreciate the life we're coming back to.
One of the nicest feelings in life isn't choosing between adventure and home. It's loving both. It's being excited to leave and genuinely happy to return. To me, that's a quiet sign of contentment. Not because life is perfect, and not because every day is easy, but because you've created a life that feels like yours.
A gentle invitation
Today, I'd love you to pause for just a moment and look around your home with fresh eyes. Not at the jobs that still need doing or the washing waiting to be folded, but at the things that make you feel safe, comforted and at peace. It might be your favourite chair, the morning light in your kitchen, the sound of birds outside, your dog asleep on the floor or simply the feeling of closing your front door at the end of a busy day.
Home doesn't have to be perfect to be special. Sometimes it's the beautifully ordinary moments that quietly remind us just how much there is to appreciate. So wherever you are today, I hope you take a moment to notice the life you've built around you. Because perhaps one of the greatest signs that we're creating a life we love isn't just that we enjoy getting away. It's that we're genuinely happy to come home.
